Yukie Wathelet

Yukie started learning American raku ceramic from a well-known local ceramist in Italy in 2006. At the same time she took sculpture lessons from Dagna Graziano, in Sarzana Italy. A year later her work came fourth at the annual Sarzana open competition, with a ceramic pot depicting the theme of flower for that competition.

Yukie returned to Canberra in 2008 and joined the CPS as a member. That year she studied ceramic techniques from the world famous Hiroe Swen. Encouraged by winning the Ceramic Technical Merit Award and the Walker Ceramic Award, Yukie started specialising in hand-build works.

Yukie also attended various hands-on workshops given at the Strathnairn Arts Association, in particular the enjoyable Lindsay Oesteritter and Owen Rye workshops in 2009. The following years Yukie attended a number of workshops at the ANU, CPS and Strathnairn to further her understanding in hand-build ceramics and wood firing with Ian Jones at Strathnairn.

Yukie strives to create ceramic objects in a classic balanced style with an innovative streak reflected most prominently in her wood firing works.
